Rev Robert Parrett was born in Devonshire, England. He and his wife, Martha Mason, immigrated to New York? or Baltimore, aboard the ship Mary Ann Orient, landing in 1816. Their first child, daughter Mary Ann, was born at sea two days before they docked. The family traveled overland to Pittsburgh, PA, then Vincennes, Indiana, and then on to Blairsville, and finally Evansville, where they stayed the rest of the lives.
The couple went on to have nine more children, four more girls and five boys. The Reverend acquired to large tracts of land that are now the southeast portion of Evansville. He and his sons made the brick used to build the first Methodist Episcopal church in the city.
Robert was a circuit-riding preacher most of his life and was instrumental in establishing Asbury College at Greencastle, now known as DePauw University.
