Cartoonist. Along with Jack Kirby, he co-created "Captain America". Born Hymie Simon, the son of a Jewish tailor who immigrated from England, Simon's father instilled the concept of hard work and giving great effort within his son in order to be successful in life. He heeded his father's advice and during high school became director of the newspaper, later serving as an editorial cartoonist statewide in New York, finally settling in New York City. Simon's stellar reputation as an artist enabled him to secure a job at Timely Comics (forerunner to Marvel) and while there he formed a legendary partnership with Jack Kirby, initially resulting in "Blue Bolt" (1940). With the terror of Nazi Germany in full force, Simon and Kirby (both of Jewish heritage) conceived the concept of an American superhero who triumphs over evil. The first issue of "Captain America" made it's introduction in March 1941 (prior to the United States' entry into World War II), displaying the hero punching Hitler (the face of monstrosity). During World War II, Simon served with the US Coast Guard and following his return home, he resumed his collaborations with Kirby which yielded the characters "Fly", "Stuntman", "Black Magic" and "The Shield". In addition, Simon established his own magazine "Sick" and is credited with merging romance with comics. He later moved onto DC Comics and solely created "Brother Power, The Geek". Beginning in the late 1960s, he sued Marvel Comics for the rights of "Captain America", eventually settling out of court, however a second attempt to retrieve the rights by Simon in 1999 led to several years of battling, resulting in a favorable verdict for Marvel. Since it's debut, "Captain America" has become a television series and motion picture adaptation. (bio by: C.S.)
