World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, enlisting in 1942, served as a Private First Class, with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Marianas Islands. On July 22, 1944, while under fire by enemy machineguns not more than 15 yards away, he entirely on his own initiative, climbed out of gully and moved toward the rear of the enemy position. Although fired upon and wounded repeatedly, he pressed forward and reached his objective clearing out the hostile position, killing 5 Japanese. His heroic act in the face of almost certain death enabled his platoon to accomplish its mission. He died of his wounds the following day aboard a hospital ship offshore. Secretary of the Navy, Forrestal, posthumously presented the Medal of Honor to his mother in 1945.
