Bennie D. Wells was born on July 25, 1925, in Belzoni, Mississippi to the union of the late Bennie and Madora Wells. He was the youngest of seven children.

Beckoned by World War II, Bennie joined the United States Navy. He served abroad ships, until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Bennie met his lifelong partner, the beautiful Mayme L. Newell. Bennie joined in Holy Matrimony with Mayme L. Newell at St. Louis Baptist Church in Missouri on November 9, 1947. Moving to Chicago he and his wife began their family. From their union five children were born; David, Dwight, Pamela, Donald, and Dana.

Bennie began his professional career as a meat inspector with The U.S. Department of Agriculture. He later trained at Ohio State University and advanced to a Consumer Foods Inspector with The U.S. Department of Agriculture. Working for over 30 years he retired with the gratitude of Americans for his service as a food inspector in 1986.

After being in Chicago for a few years, Bennie and his family joined St. Martin Catholic Church in 1954 and remained members until moving to South Shore in 1966. After moving to South Shore, they joined Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Bennie volunteered in various capacities with the Church. For a period of time, he served as President of the Men's Club. He served as an usher until his health started to wane.

Bowling became a passion for Bennie as he became an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues throughout his lifetime. He Would take his sons and daughter with him to bowl as they got older.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2005, the final chapter was written for Bennie. God thoughtfully closed the book and took Bennie home to live with him eternally in paradise.

Bennie D. Wells was preceded in death by three sisters: Ms. Juanita Wells, Mrs. Odessa McGinnis and Mrs. Adele Moss; one son, Mr. Donald C. Wells; Two brother-in-laws: Mr. James Moss and Mr. Samuel Ferguson; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilbertine Wells.

Leaving to cherish the memories of Bennie are: a loving wife, Mayme L. Wells; three sons, David R. Wells, Dwight D. Wells(Gaile) and Dana E. Wells(Victoria); one daughter, Pamela J. Barnett (Jamel), fourteen grand- children, five great-grandchildren; two brothers: Horace Wells and Alphonso Wells; one sister, Connie Ferguson; a host of other relatives and friends.
