John James was the son of Thomas and Amelia Handley of Northfleet and the brother of Robina, Charles, Thomas, Elizabeth, William, Percy, Edith and Alice.

He was born in Northfleet on 7th February 1893.

He served as a Lance Corporal with the Royal Engineers in the Middle East during WWI, his service number was 541963. When he was de-mobbed after the war he was paid the sum of £42-3s-5d.

He married Mary Holborn at St. Botolph's Church, Northfleet, on 26th December 1925 and had a daughter, Joan (1922), they lived at 79 Charles Street, Stone. He worked first as a labourer and later as a time-keeper at White's Cement Works.

He collapsed and died aged fifty-three while watching a match at Gravesend and Northfleet Football Ground on 28th September 1946, he had been ill for some time. He was buried in Stone Cemetery.
