American religious leader. Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Eleventh bishop and sixth archbishop of Chicago. A native of St. Louis (Missouri), he studied first at the St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, in St. Louis, then went to Rome at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum "De Propaganda Fide,"and at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum San Apollinare. He was ordained priest in the Eternal City, on December 8, 1931 and stayed there until 1938 to serve on the Staff of the North American College, while attached attached to the Secretariat of State. Then, for two years, he served as the secretary of archbishop of St. Louis. He was made chancellor of the archdiocese of St, Louis, on May 2, 1940. On May 14, 1947 he was elected titular bishop of Apollonia and appointed Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis where he was ordained a bishop on July 2, 1947. He was appointed Coadjutor to the Bishop of Saint Joseph (Missouri) on January 27, 1954. He was appointed Bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph (Missouri) on August 29, 1956 and installed October 11, 1956. He was appointed Coadjutor to the Archbishop of New Orleans (Louisiana) on August 14, 1961, appointed Apostolic Administrator on June 1, 1962 and acceded to the See of New Orleans on November 8, 1964 before being transferred as Archbishop of Chicago (Illinois), on June 16, 1965 and installed next August 24. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest, on June 26, 1967. He participated in both conclaves of 1978. He died from a heart attack in his episcopal city.
