Canadian Politician. A native of Falkirk, Scotland, he came to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1910 and eventually settled in Weyburn, Saskatchewan with his family. In 1930, he became a minister and began to work at the Calvary Baptist Church. He later entered politics and helped co-founded the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1934, and also ran in that party for a seat but lost, instead being more successful to win in 1935 in the federal election. He served two terms and later served as the Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961. As Premier, he was instrumental in hospital insurance and Canada's Medicare programs. In 1961 when the CCF became the New Democratic Party, he became its first leader until 1971 when he resigned, and also served in the House of Commons until 1979. He was the father of actress Shirley Douglas and the maternal grandfather of actor Kiefer Sutherland.
