Royal House of Saxony. Baptized with the multiple names of Anton Clement Theodor Maria Joseph John Evangelist Nepomuceno Francis Xavier Louis Gennaro and known as Anton der Gütige, he was the fifth-born son of Friedrich Christian king of Saxony. He ascended the throne (1827) at the age of 71, after a series of circumstances that led to the death of his older brothers. Completely inexperienced in politics, he preferred to leave the institutions and laws of the state unchanged. The only changes made by Anton Wettin were the approval of the Constitution (1831) and the accession of Saxony to the German Customs Union (Zollverein) in 1834.
