Professional Golfer. He was the first winner of the Masters in 1934. He became a professional in 1926, and subsequently went on to capture a long series of professional crowns, including the Masters Tournament of 1934 and 1936. A five-time member of the United States Ryder Cup Team, he was elected president of the PGA in 1955, 1956, and 1957. In 1958 his career was crowned by his election to the PGA's "Hall of Fame". In 1946 Horton Smith became the head professional of the Detroit Golf Club. Smith was recognized as one of the best around with the putter, and perhaps that had something to do with his success at Augusta.
