Gladys Mashburn Bowen, age 79, of Marion, NC passed away following an extended illness on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Cranberry House in Newland where she had resided for the past few years. A native of Haywood County, she was born October 15, 1932 to the late Harvey Emmett Mashburn and Margretta Smiley Mashburn. Gladys was a faithful member of West Court Baptist Church where she served in the WMU and sang in the choir. A good solid Christain woman, she will be remembered for her great cooking. She served may wonderful meals to visiting preacher and others who passed through in service to her church, and of course to her many friends and family members. She and her husband always grew a big garden and were very generous with their bounty. She loved her family very much and sacrificed a lot for her children. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Bowen, and two granddaughters, Darla Bowen and Twonia Duncan.

Surviving are four children, Benny Bowen and his wife Trudy of Marion, Nancy Parker and her husband Robert of Rock Hill, SC, Debbie Perkins of Marion and Scotty Bowen and his wife Debbie of Marion, a daughter-in-law,
Darlene Bowen of Marion, four sisters, Hazel Mashburn of Morganton, Thelma Morton of Glen Alpine, Geneva Pinson of Bostic, and Sharon Crisp of Morganton, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Hazel Huskins Mashburn.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Laurel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell Couoonty at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.
