"Death of E. Blaine Walker. E. Blaine Walker, eldest son of Major and Mrs. R.C. Walker, died at his home in this city yesterday morning, after an illness of eight months (with intermitting periods of improved health). Blaine was taken with rheumatism last January, shortly after the legislature met, and was unable to be about again until late in the spring. He was still feeble and hoping that a little out door life would be beneficial, he went on a hunting excursion to Flathead Lake, accompanied by a younger brother. Although the trip seemed to help him, he received a back-set by taking a severe cold, which was followed by an attack of pneumonia and he returned home much enfeebled. Since that time his decline has been gradual but sure, and for a week or ten days past his life has trembled in the balance. His death was painless, calm, and peaceful. Blaine Walker was a young man of exceptional brilliancy and culture in art, music, and letters, and was a great favorite in Helena society. For several months last year he filled the position of city editor of the Helena Daily Herald, and throughout the Territory was recognized as one of the ablest and brightest writers in the ranks of Montana journalism. His death will be heard of with deep regret and with universal sympathy for the bereaved family." Helena Independent, 9/23/1883, page 5.
