Elopement - All attempts at recovering the heiress were useless for at five o'clock on the morning of May 17, 1835 at Gretna Hall, Marcia Maria Grant and Brinsley Sheridan were made man ans wife. Her father General Grant was unwilling to submit to ths occurrence calmly and at first felt inclined to take an action for conspiracy in Richard Brinsley Sheridan carrying off his daughter. He sent Captain Rose to summon Lord Seymour to a duel for Lady Seymour's share in the elopement. The duel took place at Hampstead, then a lonely spot. Here at an early hour in the morning, the principals, their seconds and a surgeon crossed the dewy fields in silence. The first change of shots having no effect, General Grant, still unappeased, desired that the pistols should be reloaded, but Captain Rose was asked if he thought Lord Seymour had given sufficient satisfaction and then Lord Seymour was ready to explain various occurrences regarding the elopement and the duel ended. Sir Colquhoun next summoned Norton to a duel; but the latter being unwilling to rish his life, managed to passify the irate father, who soon afterwards became reconcied to his daughter's marriage; and on dying on the 20th of the following December at the age of 72, left her his estates; when she and her husband entered ion a long and happy life.

Marriage - June 8 at Arthuret, Cumberland, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, esq. to Marcia Maria Grant, daughter of Lieut. Genera Sir Colquhoun Grant, having been previously married by elopement at Gretna Green.
