Lawrence was the third of nine children born to Theodore Von Bokern and Marie Feldmann. About 1941 he married Leona "Lee" McClain and they one daughter, Joan. Leona died in 1945 and in 1948 he married his second wife, Anna Askin. They had one son, Robert. Lawrence was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was the former owner of the Von Bokern Bakery and a retired baker for Durkee Famous Foods. He also worked as a baking instructor for the Jefferson Community College.
