Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company G, 2d Ohio Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on October 8, 1862 at Perryville, Kentucky. His citation reads "In the hottest part of the fire he stepped in front of his colonel to shield him from the enemy's fire."
