During World War II, he served briefly in the U.S. Army, and after the war, he engaged in the practice of law in Fairfax, Virginia. He also was employed by the Federal Government until 1961. Entering politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth Congress and to the next two succeeding Congresses, serving (1967 to 1973). After leaving Congress, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving (1973 to 1979). Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death.
