With his first marriage Atherton Hough became brother-in-law of Rev. Peter Bulkeley, and thus a part of the extensive network centered on him and his siblings. Hough was thus uncle by marriage of Oliver Mellowes (son of ABRAHAM MELLOWES), and on 1 September 1640 "Mr. Atherton Hoffe" was joined with the deacons of Boston church to "have authority & order to sell the house & ground which was Mr. Mellows, to be disposed of by them for the good of the six children till they come to age, or marry, & the eldest son to have a double portion."
