The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 22, 2008, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict's Monastery, St. Joseph, for S. Linnea Welter who died on Friday, December 19, 2008, at Saint Scholastica Convent. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent on Sunday, December 21, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict's Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. on Monday, December 22, until the time of the funeral at 3:30 p.m.
Eleanore Mary was born August 15, 1913, to John and Agnes (Sinnen) Welter in Excelsior, Minn. She attended St. Hubert's grade school in Chanhassen and graduated from Saint Benedict's High School in St. Joseph. When she entered Saint Benedict's Monastery on December 6, 1937, she became Sister Linnea. Her first monastic profession was on July 11, 1939, her perpetual profession on July 11, 1942. Her Golden Jubilee and 60th anniversary celebrations were joyous occasions.
S. Linnea graduated from the College of Saint Benedict with a B.A. degree in English. She also earned an M.A. degree in English from the University of Minnesota. For further study, she attended Fordham University in New York, Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., and the University of Birmingham in Stratford, England. Her lifetime ministry in education began at Regis High School, Eau Claire, Wis., and Cathedral High School, St. Cloud. Then followed 32 years at the College of Saint Benedict, where she taught in the English Department and at times served as chair. She was president of the College of Saint Benedict from 1961-1963, overseeing the transfer of ownership of the college and its separate incorporation. After her term as president, she continued teaching English until 1982. For the next ten years, she continued to do writing and editing work for the college. She retired to Saint Scholastica in 1992, where her editing skills remained in demand. Her pastimes included reading for the blind and nurturing plants.
S. Linnea is survived by the Sisters in her Benedictine community; one brother, Gerald, of Minnetonka, and one sister, Janice (Jerome) Dupont of Bloomington. Three brothers (August, James and Norbert) and three sisters (Dorothy, Helen [Earl] Blaylock, and Sister Michelle of St. Paul's Monastery in St. Paul, Minn.) preceded her in death.
