Ralph J. Casey, 97, formerly of Sixth Street, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Dover on Sept. 24, 1911, the son of Peter F. and Catherine M. (Davis), Casey was educated in the Dover Schools and has lived here all of his lifetime.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy Seabees. Before his retirement in 1970, he was an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with 32 years of government service.

He was a member of the Dover Post #8 American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Dover Council #807, Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Mary Church.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of St. Ann Healthcare Center for the excellent care provided to Ralph for the past several years.

The widower of Mary Eileen (Ludden) Casey, who died in 1981, he is survived by three sons, Brian J. Casey and wife Karen of The Villages, Fla., Joseph F. Casey and wife Nancy of Dover, Robert J. Casey and wife Ruth of Pittsfield; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Rafferty and husband Mark of Dover; six grandchildren, Sean Rafferty, Ryan Casey, Jeffrey Casey, Christopher Casey, Meghan Rafferty and Laura Casey; five great-grandchildren, Brendan Casey, Owen Casey, Allison Casey, Olivia Casey and Jack Rafferty; a sister, Lorraine Vigneault of Longmeadow, Mass.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers Edgar, Maurice, John and Philip Casey.

Friends are invited to call from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Tasker Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church, located at the corner of Chestnut & Third Streets. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
