Saint Margaret of Scotland
Birth: Sep. 8, 1045
Death: Nov. 16, 1093
Edinburgh
City of Edinburgh, Scotland

Roman Catholic Saint, Scottish Monarch. The daughter of Edward Atheling, and wife of King Malcolm III Canmore, she founded several churches and abbeys, instituted religious reforms, and brought the Celtic church under the control of Rome. She was a patroness of the arts and education, and was very active in charitable works. She bore eight children, all of whom she raised in the church. She spent much of her time in devotional reading, and was exemplary of a just and caring ruler. She became ill and died just four days after the deaths of her husband and son. She was canonized in 1250 by Pope Innocent IV. Her feast day is June 10, celebrated on November 16 in Scotland. (bio by: Kristen Conrad)
