He served as Governor of the State of Michigan for six terms, from 1949 to 1960. He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine on September 15, 1952. He served as Michigan Supreme Court's Chief Justice from 1983 to 1986.
Williams died in a Detroit hospital on February 2, 1988, at 76. His body was entombed in a temporary crypt at Evergreen Cemetery in Detroit until it could be buried on Mackinac Island after winter.
