Actor. He was a prolific actor best known for playing the character roles of barflies, hot dog vendors, henchmen, taxi drivers, valets, dandys, military men, clerks, jurors, gamblers, customers, train conductors, and criminals named Shorty, Weasel, Slug, Fink, and Lefty, etc., in crime, action, and western films of the 1930s and 1940s. He was at one time considered one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, California. He will be best remembered for playing the role of 'Andy Kent' in the classic western film, "Galloping Romeo" (1933). The film which was directed and written by Robert N. Bradbury, which was also written for the screen by Harry L. Fraser, and which also starred Bob Steele, Doris Hill, and George 'Gabby' Hayes, tells the story of money that is mysteriously disappearing from a locked trunk atop the stage even though the trunk arrives still locked. When pals Bob Rivers and Grizzly get the job driving the stage, the same thing happens. He was born one of three children as Ernest Stephen Dumarais to Leon Dumarais (1856-1915), and his wife Laura Girard Dumarais (1865-1951), in San Francisco, California, on June 18, 1885. He also had four half-siblings, Bertina Beatty (1892-1922), Aimee R. Beatty (1893-1952), Laura Beatty (1895-1923), and Bert Ford Beatty (1905-1988). He was educated locally and he began using the last name of Adams when he became interested in acting. He began his acting career in the vaudeville team of "Gilbert and Adams," and appeared on Broadway in musical comedy and in such stage productions as Jerome Kern's play, in the role of a 'Train Butcher' in "Toot-Toot!" (March 11, 1918, to April 13, 1918). He then made the transition to films. He made his actual film debut playing the uncredited role of the 'Agency Employee' in the comedy film drama, "The Delicious Little Devil" (1919). The film which was directed by Robert Z. Leonard, which was written for the screen by Harvey F. Thew and John B. Clymer, and which also starred Mae Murray, Richard Cummings, and Harry L. Rattenbury, tells the story of a poor hat-check girl who loses her job and is forced to get a job as a dancer at a roadhouse. There she falls in love with the son of a rich businessman. The boy's father, believing her to be after the family's money, determines to embarrass her and show his son what she really is. The film which was directed by Ray Enright, which was written for the screen by Charles O'Neal, Jack Natteford, and Luci Ward, and which also starred Randolph Scott, Robert Ryan, and Anne Jeffreys, tells the story of when part of Oklahoma Territory becomes officially part of the U.S., Vance Cordrell is forced to deal with some of the most infamous outlaws of the Old West. During his acting career, he also used the name of Ernest Adams and Ernie S. Adams. He passed away from acute pulmonary edema in Hollywood, California, on November 26, 1947, at the age of 62, and he was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California. He was married to Berdonna Weinberg Adams (1890-1961), with whom he was part of the vaudeville act, "Gilbert and Adams," and the couple had a child, a daughter. Berdonna survived her husband and she passed away in Hollywood, California, on February 12, 1961, at the age of 70, and she is buried with him at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California. He was also previously married to Mamie Silver Adams, Margaret Adams, and Shirley Laurette Adams.
