Senior Police Officer Gayle Thomas was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while assisting other officers with a traffic incident on the exit ramp from southbound I-75 to northbound I-85.

She had just exited her vehicle when she was struck by the drunk driver. She was struck again by other vehicles after initially being struck by the drunk driver.

The driver of the first vehicle to strike Officer Thomas was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, and reckless driving.

Officer Thomas had served with the Atlanta Police Department for 15 years.

Gail Denise Thomas was born December 22, 1965 in Atlanta, Georgia to Juliet Mack Thomas and Early Thomas. She died Tuesday night, January 24, 2012. Gail was educated through the Atlanta Public School system and was a proud graduate of the S. H. Archer Class of 1983. She graduated from Georgia Military College in 2004 with a degree in Criminal Justice. She had a special dedication to family and the cherished values of compassion and service to others. She devoted nearly 20 years to the Atlanta Police Department. Gail loved serving as a police officer. She enjoyed her community based assignments, and therefore served with distinction. As a police officer, Gail served Zone 5 on the foot, bike, and mobile beat, patrolling downtown Atlanta merchants. A truly dedicated public servant, she also served with the honor guard, the Red Dog Unit, staff inspections before making Senior Patrol Officer, and as a field training officer (FTO) to new recruits. Gail was preceded in death by her mother Juliet "Judy" Mack Thomas. She leaves to cherish her smile and memory, loving daughter Jasmine, father Mr. Early Thomas, brothers Mr. Earl Bernard Thomas and Mr. Demetrius Thomas, grandmother Mrs. Dimple Thomas, aunts Mr. and Mrs. Opal (Roy) Evans and Barbara McCaray, uncles Mr. and Mrs. Douglas (Shirley) Ross, Mr. Crawford Mack, Mr. and Mrs. Eustis (Delois) Blakley, and Mr. and Mrs. Rasheed (Patricia) Blakley, best friend and godmother to Jasmine, Kimberly Osburn, Darrell and Trinia Favors, several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, and co-workers. Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 30, 2012, 11am, Elizabeth Baptist Church, 4245 Cascade Rd. SW. Instate 9 am. Rev. Craig L. Oliver, Sr., Pastor. Rev. Dr. Kenneth Marcus, Pastor of Turner Chapel AME Church, Marietta, Eulogist. Interment Mt. Harmony Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 10:30 am on day of service.
