He was one of several persons called by the Mormon Church to SW Utah in the 1850s for the "Cotton Mission". He homesteaded the land(160 acres)Which became the town of Hammond. The land is now an LDS farm and the Hammond cemetery remains.

Inscription located in the Sandhills. Probably that of George W. Adair who was working as a packer for John Wesley Powell. He was with the party that was temporarily stranded on the Sandhills while trying to deliver supplies to the Colorado River Expedition in 1871 at the mouth of the Paria River. This is probably the time frame that the inscription was left. John Mangum was also with the party and left his inscription a little over a mile to the east.
