Arthur Andrew Smith was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to John Andrew Smith and Jane Brunker. His mother died when he was a teenager. His mother had been married a total of three times (to James Cabble, John Smith and Aaron Nebeker) and Arthur had one brother and several half-siblings.

The 1880 Census indicates his parents had divorced and he was living with his mother, (who had reclaimed the Cabble last name) his brother John, two half-siblings, Elijah and Sarah Jane, his grandmother Elizabeth Brunker and 7 other members of the Brunker family. It is interesting to note that both Arthur and his brother John were listed as having the Cabble last name as well. They were living on 200 South in Salt Lake City in the area of 900 East. His mother Jane married Aaron Nebeker in November 1880 in Salt Lake and had a child with him the following year who was born in Laketown, Rich, Utah (the southern end of the Bear Lake Valley.) Jane died in Salt Lake in 1887 at the age of 45 from a bacterial infection. She was buried in the SLC Cemetery next to two of her children (Mariette Cabble and Elizabeth Cabble) who both died in 1868.

Arthur was living in the southern end of the Bear Lake Valley when he began working for Isaac Price (the local LDS bishop) as a hired hand on his Round Valley ranch. On October 11, 1898 he married the eldest daughter of Bishop Price, Alice Annie Price in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The entire Price family made the 290 mile round-trip by wagon to Salt Lake for both General Conference and the temple wedding of Arthur and Alice. Upon returning, the Smiths then set up their home in Round Valley near the Price family. Between 1899-1915, Arthur and Alice welcomed six children: Lorenzo, Hazelton, Elva, Norman, Darrell and Harold.

Unfortunately, baby Harold was born prematurely on March 8, 1915 and died four hours later of a collapsed lung. About 6 weeks later, on April 23rd, Alice, having been weakened by childbirth, died from pneumonia and influenza. Alice and Harold were buried near each other in the Round Valley Cemetery.

After their deaths, Arthur sent their remaining five children to live with various Price family relatives in the Bear Lake Valley and the Cache Valley. By 1918 he was listed on his WWI draft card as living near his half-sister Sarah (Sadie) Cabble Pugmire in Magna, Utah.

It is unverified, but it is believed that about this time, Arthur's father John Andrew Smith died in Salt Lake City. There are of course, several "John Smiths" however it is possible that it was he, according to a death certificate for John A. Smith, who was found dead in the street by the SLC police on March 8, 1919. A "John A. Smith" was buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery on March 15, 1919, which is adjacent to the SLC Cemetery. The death certificate also states John was a street sweeper, he was about 86 years old and lived at 517 Mortensen Court in SLC. Information regarding his parents and spouse are missing from the document. It is also unknown at this time if Arthur and his father maintained contact after the divorce and the death of his mother, Jane.

The 1920 Census places Arthur in Woodrow, Millard, Utah living as a farmer. He was living with a farming partner- no children were living with him and he was listed as "widowed."

Sometime between 1920-1930 Arthur moved to California. At some point during this period he married his 2nd wife, Annie Louisa Eldridge (who was also a Latter-day Saint from Salt Lake City.) He may have met Annie Eldridge because Arthur's half-sister, Sarah Jane Cabble, was married to Jonathan Pugmire. And Jonathan Pugmire was Annie Eldridge's ex-husband. Another connection may have been that the Pugmire family also lived in the Bear Lake Valley. In fact, during the time Jonathan Pugmire was married to Annie, they lived in Meadowville, which is located just north of Round Valley. It's possible the Pugmires knew the Smiths at that time.

The 1930 Census states Arthur and Annie are living at 347 4th Street, Pittsburg, Contra Costa, California. Arthur's occupation was listed as a truck driver for a steel mill. He stayed in contact with his children and they sometimes visited him in California.

He died on February 10, 1939 at the age of 63 in Contra Costa County, California. He is buried in the Oak View Memorial Park alongside his second wife, Annie, who died one year later on February 14, 1940.
