Oden served as a Seaman, First Class, U.S.S. New Mexico (BB-40), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland prior to the war.

He was "Killed In Action" when the New Mexicon was attacked by two Japanese kamikazes; one plunged into her, the other managed to hit her with his bomb during the war. 53 other sailors were killed during the attack. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

The surviving family of soldiers were allowed to request what State appeared on their Tombstone. That is the case with this soldier's headstone and it is unknown why it shows Tennessee....
