Death: Nov. 7, 1984

Actor. Characterized by rough hewn features and bushy eyebrows, Mathews was often cast in tough guy or military roles, roles that were the antithesis of his off screen persona, intelligent, chess playing and amiable. In addition to theater, he appeared in 60 titles including, Wing and a Prayer (1944), Pat and Mike (1952) with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) with Frank Sinatra, Gun Fight at the O.K. Corral (1957) and many television series, including The Phil Silvers Show, The Honeymooners, Naked City, Perry Mason, The Untouchables, Car 54 Where Are You?, and Glynis. He retired from acting in 1972, and died in South Carolina at age 73. (bio by: Frank R. Adamski)
