Hall of Fame Professional Boxing Figure. A well-respected trainer, he was instrumental in shaping the careers of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. Born Angelo Mirena in a predominantly Italian section of South Philadelphia, he took an interest in boxing chiefly due to his older brothers Chris who was a promoter and Joe who was a fighter. Following service during World War II, Angelo (along with his brothers) adopted the last name Dundee to prevent his parents from learning of his association with boxing. Initially a "bucket boy" who worked the fighter's corner, he was taught by the best trainers in the business. He inhabited Stillman's Gym in New York while his reputation as a fine corner-man grew. The number of fighters who sought out his services climbed. World Welterweight and Middleweight Champion Carmen Basilio became the first boxer of notability to employ Dundee followed by future World Light-Heavyweight Champion Willie Pastrano. After relocating to Miami in 1959, he began his association with Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) whom he came in contact with previously. He helped Clay capture the World Heavyweight Championship with a defeat of Sonny Liston in 1964 and remained by Ali's side through the ups-and-downs of his career. During the 1970s and 1980s, Sugar Ray Leonard achieved greatness with the aid of Dundee, who prepared him for the famed bouts with Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. In 1994 with Dundee in his corner, George Foreman completed his historic comeback when he knocked out Michael Moorer to recapture the World Heavyweight Title. He was named Manager of the Year twice (1968 and 1979) by the Boxing Writers Association of America and received the James J. Walker Memorial Award in 1996. For his significant contributions to the sport, Dundee was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992. He died from a heart attack.
