"ACCUSE MANELLA OF BRUTAL CRIME

SUSPICIONS GIVEN WEIGHT BY CORONER'S VERDICT

Sicilian Who Was Last Seen with La Rocca May Be Able to Solve Mystery of His Murder

"'We, the coroner's jury, find that Giuseppe La Rocca came to his death by a knife wound of the heart supposedly inflicted by one Benedetto Manella, with intent to kill and murder said Giuseppe La Rocca.'

The foregoing verdict was returned at the inquest held at the undertaking establishment of Pierce Bros. over the body of Giuseppi La Rocca, an aged Sicilian who was found date last Saturday night with more than a score of dagger wounds in his body -- another sacrifice to the terrible vendetta, a word of which the mere mention will cause a native of the little island in the Mediterranean to tremble with terror.

The police are reticent about discussing the case, but it is understood that trouble first began when La Rocca and Manella were living in Sicily many years ago.

Manella was the last man seen with La Rocca, and since the tragedy had disappeared and all efforts to find him have proved futile.

Although the detectives detailed on the case have run down every clew (sic) they have beeb unable to find the missing man, and it is believed that he is in hiding in or about Los Angeles.

His Home Watched

The officers have visited the home of Manella a number of times and have made close examinations of the premises and have questioned the wife, but nothing has been learned. The house is constantly watched by the police, and it is not believed that Manella will make an attempt to communicate with his family.

Yesterday afternoon, it is understood, the officers working on the case received some information regarding the much wanted man, and it is believed his arrest will be effected in a short time.

While the officers are following this clew (sic) others will be detailed to make inquiries and possible secure additional information that will throw more light upon the motive for the brutal murder.

The detectives say they believe Manella is within a score of miles of Los Angeles, and think he is well hidden, but as his photograph and description have been given to each officer in this county his liberty will be but of short duration should he attempt to emerge from hiding.

While the officers will not discuss the case, it is understood that La Rocca upon one occasion many years ago had trouble with Manella or a member of the latter's family, and the murder of the other night was the result of vendetta. The circumstances leading up to the tragedy form a veritable romance, say the police.

Funeral services over La Rocca will be held at the chapel of Pierce Bros. this morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be in Calvary cemetery."
