Walter Herman, the oldest child of seven born to Gustav and Freda Kern Tubach, was born 2 Jan 1899 in Arago Twp, Richardson Co., east of Falls City, NE. His siblings were: Otto Emil, Edmund J., August Anton, Anna Christine, Lilla Freda and Lloyd E. The family moved to a farm near Glasco, in Cloud Co. KS, in 1914, when Walter was 15 years old. He returned to the Falls City area and in 1919, he started working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, repairing steam engines in the round-house.

On 1 Oct 1925, Walter married Mary Shafer, the daughter of Langford and Elizabeth Ankrom Shafer. Their children were Virgil Lee (7 Dec 1929 - 17 Nov 2001) and Helen Jane (23 Jul 1936 - ). In 1944, Walter and Mary bought an 80 ac farm north of Barada. In 1951, due to a farm accident, Walter had to have his hand amputated. The land was rented out and they moved to Lincoln, NE, where Walter worked for Goodwill Industries until he retired in 1961. They joined the First Baptist Church in Lincoln.

Walter and Mary celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 1990. He died 20 Jan 1992, and was buried in the Prairie
Union Cemetery. He was a kind and caring man who loved the outdoors and working the land, enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, and was proud of his grandchildren.
