Walter was the son of Gilbert de Gaunt, by Alice, sometimes called Emma, daughter of Hugh, comté de Montfort, and eventually heir of her brother. He founded the priory of Bridlington about 1114 and was a member of Henry I's Council in 1121/22 and again in 1131. He was at Stephen's Easter court in 1136, and was at the Battle of the Standard in 1138. He died in 1139, after having taken the habit at Bardney. He bequeathed to Bridlington a reliquary sent to him from Jerusalem by Baldwin, his sister's husband.
