Charles Clarence Neslen,age 88,former Mayor of Salt Lake City,passed away on December 6th,1967 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City due to a lingering illness.Charles was born in Salt Lake City,to the parents of Robert Francis and Eliza Saville Neslen.
C.C.Neslen worked for the Deseret News for 13 years in various capasities,ranging from being a delivery boy to an assistant manager.He was elected a Salt Lake City Commissioner of the Water Supply and Water Works for 10 years. Mr Neslen was elected Mayor for Salt Lake City from 1920 to 1928.Being an active member of the Democratic Party he was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1912,1948 and in 1952.Mr Neslen was also elected as State Senator,Salt Lake County Assessor, and Isurance Commissioner and assistant manager of the Home owners Loan Corp.He always fullfilled his obligations.
C.C.Neslen served a Mission to Germany from 1902 to 1904,was a member of the High Council of Ensign and Pioneer Stakes,Stake Superintendent of Sunday Schools in the Pioneer Stake,and as Bishop of the Twentieth Ward for 26 years.He had a gift of making friends and keeping them.
Charles Married Grace Cannon on October 26th,1905 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple .She passed away on September 25th, 1945.During World War Two,he served as Chief of Chaplains at Fort Lewis,Washington,where he had the rank of Lietenant Colonel. C.C.Neslen married Julia Paxman Sloan on June 20th,1950 in the Salt Lake Temple.
C.C.Neslen is the father of five children.sons,Clarence Cannon(Leone)and Charles Richard Neslen of Salt Lake,Robert C.(Margaret),Santa Barbara,California,George Quayle(Eleanor)Neslen,Whittier,California,daughter Gertrude(Alan)Thody.Husband to Julia Paxman Neslen,Step children,Bruce(Tonja)Sloan,Salt Lake City,Irene(Bob) Shaw,Bountiful,Utah. Also surviving are two sisters,Alice Louise Neslen and Bessie Neslen Judges,Salt Lake City.He has 24 Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday December 9th,1967 in the 20th Ward Chapel,107 G Street at 12 noon.Then he was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
