Indiana Governor. During the Civil War, he served as a Sergeant in the 2nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union Army and earned distinction for his bravery in the Battle of Chickamauga. After the war, he attended the Presbyterian Academy, became a successful farmer and was recognized for his farmer institute lectures. Entering politics, he was a member to the Indiana State Senate (1888-92). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican the 24th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1901. During his term, a medical examining board was initiated, the prison system was renovated, and a labor commissioner’s office was created. A few days after leaving office, he passed away from a heart attack.
