Princess, Duchess. Maria Teresa Felicitas d'Este, daughter of Francesco III, Duke of Modena and Reggio, and his wife Charlotte Aglaé d'Orléans, was born at the Ducal Palace in Modena. She was the great-granddaughter of King Louis XIV of France. Her parents' marriage was unhappy, and she resided with her mother in Luxembourg Palace in Paris during her later childhood. Her mother arranged her marriage to Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre. The young nobleman had inherited a huge fortune in 1737. There was a proxy wedding in Modena, followed by a formal ceremony on December 29, 1744 at the Palace of Versailles. Their happy marriage produced seven children, only two of whom survived to adulthood. The Duchess of Penthièvre died in childbirth in 1754 at the Château de Rambouillet. Her final resting place was the Chapelle Royale de Dreux. (For details concerning her interment, please see the memorial for her husband or father-in-law.) The grieving, widowed Duke of Penthièvre never remarried. Through her daughter Louise Marie Adélaïde, Maria Teresa is ancestor to many of Europe's royal houses.
