Soccer Player. Known as “Papierene”, he was considered the greatest soccer player ever in Austria. A genius key-player of the Austrian ”Wonder Team” during the 1930s, his performance seemed to contradict the fact that he did not like training, but smoking, drinking and women. He played for the clubs Hertha Wien and Austria Wien. He was found dead together with an Italian prostitute in case that was shrouded in mystery, and is often referred to as the “Sindelar myth”. After the German annexation of Austria in 1938, Sindelar refused to play for the new Great Germany, and quit soccer. Some claim he was murdered by the Nazis, some that he committed suicide and some that it was an accident caused by a leaking gas tap. The official death certificate however, stated “Carbon monoxide poisoning”.
