Death of Rev. John Mattocks
We announced the death of this gentleman last week. The Rutland Globe has the following additional facts respecting his life and death: The death of Rev. John Mattocks, formerly of Rutland, at St. Paul Minnesota, Nov. 13th, is announced. He was the son of John Mattocks, Governor of Vermont 1843-4; grandson of Samuel Mattocks of Tinmouth, state treasurer from 1786 to 1800; and was born at Peacham, July 19, 1814. He fitted for college at the Peacham academy, and graduated at Middlebury college in 1832, being a classmate of James Meacham, member of Congress from Vermont, 1849-1856; Caleb B. Harrington, formerly of Rutland; Horatio Seymour, Jr., of Buffalo; Joshua Bales, Jr., of Boston; Johathan Blanchard, president of Knox college, and well known as an anti-masonic lecturer, and others.
He studied law with his father from the time of his graduation until 1835, but was never, we believe, admitted to practice, commencing, during the latter year, the study of theology, first with Rev. N.S.S. Beman, D.D., L.L.D., of Troy, and afterwards at Yale college, completing his studies in 1838. In 1838, and a portion of 1839, he taught the academy at West Rutland, and also supplied the pulpit of the Congregational church of that place, a part of the time. In 1839, he became pastor of the Presbyterian church in Keeseville, N.Y., and after preaching there several years, he removed to St. Paul, Minnesota, and became pastor of the first Presbyterian church of that city. He was there prominently connected with all educational, benevolent and social movements having for their object the well-being of the city. He was one of the founders and continued until his death an active member of the Minnesota state historical society.
