Merrill Barber Twining, 93 retired Marine Corps general: - May 16, 1996

Merrill Barber Twining, a retired Marine Corps general who helped pioneer amphibious warfare in key World War II battles, died Saturday at a Fallbrook hospital. He was 93.

A Marine for 36 years, Gen. Twining was operations officer for the 1st Marine Amphibious Corps during campaigns involving Guadalcanal and other Pacific islands.

During the Korean War, he served as assistant division commander of the 1st Marine Division in 1951.

Gen. Twining was commanding general in 1954 of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, where he designed a logo for the division that continues to be used.

Before retiring from the Marine Corps in 1959, he served as commanding general of the Marine Corps Schools in Quantico, Va.

The Monroe, Wis., native was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer after graduating in 1923 from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Gen. Twining's wife, Vivian, died in 1988.

Survivors include son David Twining of Corvallis, Ore.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Marine Memorial Chapel, Camp Pendleton.
