Della's father, James M. Sheridan was killed in the Battle of Bristoe Station, VA on Oct 14, 1863 during the Civil War. Her mother, Affia Haseltine (Stone) Sheridan died the following year in 1864. Della was only 5 years old when her mother died leaving all four children orphaned. After Affia died, her four daughters were split up among relatives and never lived together again.

Della first went to live with her Aunt Elizabeth Della Stone (Della's namesake and Affia's sister) who was married to Dr. John Kirkman. Della lived with the Kirkman's until she was 12 yrs old. She then went to live with her cousin Phoebe Ann Stone and her husband Thomas J. Ellis. Phoebe's father, Capt. Nicholas S. Stone was Affia's older brother. Della always called her cousin Phoebe Ann Stone, Aunt Phoebe because she was much older. In reality she was her cousin not her aunt.
