Sir William Young
Birth: Sep. 8, 1799
Falkirk, Scotland
Death: May 8, 1887
Halifax County
Nova Scotia, Canada

2nd Premier of Nova Scotia. A member of the Liberal Party, he served in this position from April 1854 until February 1857 and again briefly from February 1860 until August 1860. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, he graduated from the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland in 1813 and the following year he emigrated with his family to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He engaged in different business ventures and in 1825 he became an attorney and started practicing law in Halifax. In 1836 he was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature from Inverness County, serving until 1860. In April 1854 he became Premier, replacing the retiring James Boyle Uniacke, only to be ousted when his Liberal Party was voted out in February 1857, and he was replaced by James William Johnson. In February 1860 he replaced Johnson but served for only six months before being replaced by Joseph Howe. In July 1860 he was appointed Nova Scotia's Chief Justice, serving until 1881. In 1869 he became a Knight Bachelor and received other honors, including an honorary degree from Queen's College at Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He died in Halifax at the age of 87. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
