Politician. Jose De Diego, a Puerto Rican patriot, started his political life in the Assembly of the Autonomist Party in Mayaguez in 1891. He advocate for Puerto Rico's independence from Spain and from the United States, who was referred to by his peers as "The Father of the Puerto Rican Independence Movement." He desired the fusion of that political party with the National Autonomist Party. Under the Autonomic government of 1897, he was sub-secretary of Justice. Under the Foraker Law, he was elected to the Chamber of Delegates and from 1907 was its president. With the institution of the first House of Representatives in 1917, De Diego was its first President.
