Explorer, Mountaineer. A Sherpa from Solo Khumbu, Nepal, Norgay participated mostly as a guide in many successful expeditions up Mount Everest, the most famous climb being the first with New Zealand mountaineer and noted explorer Sir Edmund Percival Hillary on May 29, 1953. The two explorers ascended the famous mountain and reached the summit up to a record feet of 29,035. After the climb the two men were given great praise and national stardom including many honors including a knighthood for Hillary. In 1978 Norgay opened up the Tenzing Norgay Adventures, which guided people up the mountains in the Himalayas. In 1996 his son Jamling Tenzing Norgay followed in his footsteps and also climbed Mount Everest. Tenzing Norgay died in Darjeeling, India, on May 9, 1986, at the age of 71. He was cremated near the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute that he had founded and was director of for many years.
