Crimea War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born York, Upper Canada, he served as a Lieutenant in the 11th Hussars, British Army. During the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava, Russia, on October 25, 1854, Lieutenant Dunn was in command of troop of Light Dragoons horseman. At the height of the attack, Lieutenant Dunn, having emptied his revolver, used his saber to rescue a Sergeant by cutting down two or three Russian Lancers who had attacked from the rear. Later in the battle, he killed another Russian who had been attacking a Private. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was the first Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross and later achieved the rank of Colonel.
