World War II Victoria Cross Medal. He served as a Sergeant in the Royal Natal Carabineers. At Alem Hamza, Libya, on June 5, 1942, during an attack on an enemy strong-point Sergeant Smythe took command of the platoon when his officer was severely wounded. Although he was wounded in the head, he continued to lead the advance, stalking an anti-tank position, he attacked and captured it single-handed killing several of the enemy. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in September, 1942 and later achieved the rank of Captain.
