Named for his great grandfather, John Donelson, pioneer settler of Tennessee and father of Rachel Donelson Jackson (wife of Andrew Jackson). His father, Brig. General John Donelson Martin, Sr., C.S.A., was killed at the age of thirty two, leading troops on the first day of the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. His mother subsequently married Andrew Jackson Donelson, a younger brother of his father, and had several more children. John, Jr. married Mary Walker Hull at Benton County, Mississippi in 1882. They became parents to yet another John Donelson Martin and Mary Clayton Martin. John D. Martin, Jr. was killed at the age of thirty two while trying to break a horse, according to a descendant. This was the same age as his own father when he died. His son who was mentioned above, John Donelson Martin (1883-1962), served as a United States Federal Judge.
