U.S. Congressman. He graduated from St. John Preparatory School, in 1920, graduated from Northeastern University School of Law, in 1925 and was a lawyer in private practice. He was a councilman and alderman of Worcester, Massachusetts, (1927-35) and served in the US Navy during World War II, (1942-45). After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress and to the next thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving (1947-74). During his final Congressional term, he was the second ranking Democrat of the Judicial Committee, which considered articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 83.
