Kae Brown, 76, of Williamsburg, died peacefully in her sleep at home of brain cancer on Aug. 27, 2011. A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Joseph D. Brown, MD; her brother, a daughter, three sons, and 12 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a son, John.
Kae, daughter of Ernest and Rebecca Engquist, grew up in Alexandria, Va., attended Mary Washington College and graduated from the University of Virginia Nursing School in 1954. She worked with her husband as an RN in their private medical practice up until the time of her death. A revered and vibrant member of the Williamsburg community for over 45 years, Kae served at Bruton Parish Episcopal church as a lay minister, altar guild member and Daughter of the King. She was a member of the William and Mary Community Orchestra for more than 40 years, the York River Band, as well as numerous other musical ensembles. She was key in the establishment of the Williamsburg Hospice, and donated countless hours to the American Cancer Society and other charitable organizations. A visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. A memorial service will be held at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 331 Duke of Gloucester Street, Williamsburg at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3.
