Sovereign of Scotland. Born Causantín III Mac Cuiléin of the Mc Alpin family, he, according to the Tanistry rules used by the Celtic tribes in Ireland, Scotland and on the Isle of Man, was destined as a male heir to the succession. He ascended the throne in 995, also assuming the titles of Monarch of the Picts and of Alba but only after infighting between the two branches of the family had tragic outcome. However, according to the chronicles of the kings of Alba, Constantine reigned for only eighteen months continuously under attack by an unidentified illegitimate uncle whom some historians believe was Kenneth III. The circumstances of his death are controversial. According to the Annals of Tigernach he died in battle fighting against the tribe of the Scots, while according to the Chronicles of Melrose he was assassinated near Perth by Malcolm II. His death decreed the end of the feud between the two branches of the Mc Alpin dynasty as he left no heirs.
