Elroy James was born at Hampden, Columbia County, WI on January 8, 1861, the son of John N. and Mary James. He lived on the family farm until 1883, attending public schools during the winters then took a job with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company as agent and telegraph operator. He worked at various towns, last serving in Wausau when he resigned in 1889 to accept a position as bookkeeper with Goodwillie Brothers. In 1892 he partnered with J.A. La Motte to start a musical merchandise business, and six months later Mr. James retired.
In short order Mr. James purchased the interest of W.D. Murray in the book dealer and stationers firm of A.W. Mumm & Company, with the firm becoming Mumm & James and a stock of musical merchandise was added. This continued until July 1896 when Mr. James' brother W.E. succeeded Mr. Mumm and the firm of James Brothers was established. In 1898 the book and stationery departments were sold to A.W. Mumm. In May 1899, Elroy James bought out his brother's interest in the business and the following October he purchased the stock of musical instruments and the business of J.A. La Motte. When the two stocks were consolidated, Mr. James then had easily the largest and most complete music store in this part of the state, the James Music House, located at 710 Third Avenue.
Elroy James was married on September 9, 1891 to Miss Clara Judson of Wausau and they had one daughter. Mr. James is a member of F. & A.M. lodge, was a director of the YMCA, and for four years was its choir director.
Elroy James died on July 15, 1953 in Sheridan County, Montana. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
