***My Dear Uncle***

In 1928, Gilbert moved from Nebraska to Ovid, Colorado, with his parents. He attended the Ovid schools and was a member of the class of 1939. For four years he was a member of the Ovid High School band and participated in several state contests. Everyone knew Gilbert and wherever you saw Gilbert you saw his smile.

In July, 1937, he secured employment at a CCC camp Red Feather Lake, Colorado, and while at work on 02 October, he complained of a soreness in his right arm which was diagnosed and believed to be rheumatism. His condition grew worse and he was taken to the Ft. Logan Hospital. He showed no improvement and was then taken to Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, whereupon examination revealed Septicemia poisoning. The best of medical treatment failed however to check the infection and he died on 12 Oct. He was 16 years old.

Gilbert had 10 brothers and sisters: Hazel Faye, Osa Mae, Franklin Leroy, Ivan Edward, Louis Emerson, Edson Woodrow, Lester Lloyd, Charles (Chuck) Jr., Betty Marie, and, Shirley Lee.
