Hall of Fame Professional Golfer. Born in Trenton, Texas, he was one of golf's toughest competitors and a top player in the 1940s and 1950s. He joined the pro tour in 1937 and won his first victory in the 1940 Thomasville Open. He entered the US Army during World War II with the 90th Reconnaissance Troop. He was severely injured in a jeep accident in August 1944 which kept him in hospital for six months. After the war, he won the first post-war US Open in 1946 and six PGA tournaments in 1948 and came in second in the 1950 US Open. In 1951, he was the tour's leading money winner, won the Vardon Trophy twice and was captain of the US Ryder Cup team. He finished his career in 1953, with a total of 36 PGA Tour wins and 42 professional wins. He died of a heart attack at the age of 59. He was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1999.
