Matthew McIntyre
Sheridan township lost one of it's best known and, in point of residence, oldest citizens, Saturday morning when Matthew McIntyre died. For over fifty years Mr. McIntyre has been prominent in township and county affairs and has been one of Sheridan's most successful farmers. He was born in Inverness shire, Scotland, Oct. 29, 1845. In 1848, he came with his parents to Canada and when a young man of 23 came to Michigan and Huron county where he bought the big McIntyre farm which has since been his home. The land was purchased from an Indian by the name of Bradley. At that time, about 1868, there were a great many Indians in the county and Mr. McIntyre was one of five or six white families in that part of the county. Many new families coming into the county found shelter at the McIntyre home while clearing space for a cabin.
About 1870 Mr. McIntyre was employed as captain on the lumber boats going up and down the lakes. He followed this for nine years then settled down to farm life and at the time of his death had one of the finest farms in the county.
